TELUNAS, RIAU ISLANDS
Thursday, March 11, 2010 @ 7:02 pm
Hello people! I'm finally back. Yes. I'm alive and I'm well. Sorry if you haven't heard from me like yesterday or something. Because the moment I came home, I showered, it was like 4pm or so. I slept right through till this morning 8.30am. IF THERE WASN'T OUTREACH PROGRAM MEETING, I WOULD HAVE SLEPT LONGER.
Well, I'm finally back from 4 days, out of this country. At Telunas, Batam Island. It was ROCKING GOOD. I SWEAR. LIKE SERIOUSLY HAVING POST CAMP SICKNESS NOW. I'm going to post pictures and details of Camp like right now. So if you've got the patience to read on, go ahead. I'm pretty sure its going to be a super duper duper long long post!
Team Rocket Memebers: Matin, Joseph, Joshua, Daryl, Prem, Ibrahim, Jacqueline, Tian Tian, Shiyan and Shimin!
Day 1 : 7th March
Woke up like 5.30am. Took the first train to meet group members at Harbourfront station. Then we took a 45 minute ferry to batam center, sekupang. Well, it was real weird cause we didn't know each other well enough yet. We haven't even come up with a freaking group name, Team Rocket sounded embarrasing to mention in the beginning, so we were given a name tempoarily ( NO NAMERS).
Opted for jungle trek. it was shioork. Cause we were like the first 2 groups ( together with maluku, another group) to go into the jungle. They gave us a jungle pack with a hammock, mosquito net, poncho, persha ( some shelter thing for hammock), a blanket. The entire journey was tiring, but damn worth it. You feel so good, just trekking 20km. My shoes saved me. I love it, proper jungle trekking shoes. We set up base camp near puddles of water and learnt how to tie the hammock. It was super rocky and lots of sharp bushes and trees.Had to climb a dry waterfall, and hold on to tree barks and roots to go up and down the steep jungle vegetation. There we cooked out meals using water from the stream, peeed in the jungle. Buried some stuff. When you normally tie a hammock, its like you find 2 trees like on flat ground to tie it to right. Over here, its like you find 2 STRONG trees that are of different depth. Meaning you can be sleeping hanging down, because the trees are like high, on a hill. So you're like sleeping on top of the world. Didn't dare to turn much in the night, freaking scared that I'll drop out of the hammock. Slept at 8.30am on the first night, cause its dark and you really can't do much in the dark.
Day 2: 8th March
Trekked back to the opening, where we took the boat back to the resort. There we can finally have a bath. Really sticky and smelly you know. Headed back to the beach for some games, and ice breakers. That was where we were given the name, no namers la. Then had lunch, and then did the team building activity.
RAFT BUILDING. We built our very own rafts, from nothing more than a bunch of 4m and 1.5m long bamboos and lots of rope. We learnt how to tie proper knots to secure the raft, like what mickey mouse thing and the frapping. Do until our fingers and hands all blisters and stuff. But it was a really really good effort. Because the knots were hard to untie after the activity. So we are really fantastic raft builders. The initial plan was to take the raft out with 2 kayaks, and paddle to some island. But due to time constraits, we just paddled it out to the open see, like in the middle of the open sea, and paddle back. Even so, it was really tiring paddling. The kayak was like dragging us, but still, really hard to paddle. But it was so fun. Its something you build, with your group members you know! Like what an achievement right! Plus, you had lifejackets on, and they help you float in the water. So I wasn't even afraid of falling into the water, can float. How cool is that right! DID JETTY JUMP. 6M, DID IT TWICE. DIDN'T DARE TO DO 9M. SO 6M IS JUST NICE FOR ME. FREAKING ADDICTIVE. THE MALUKUS DID IT AGAIN ON THE 3RD DAY.
Dinner was served. Don't have to worry about losing weight. You can't! Its eat all you can buffet. Then after that, had telunas olympics. Right after that, eating some fish keropok and the squatting game and the sticking the pencil into the bottle neck, and also picking up "chachas" using chopsticks! Then the last one, nutella was spread onto matin's face, and we had to throw honey stars on it. Competing with the other group. That was like the eventual sort of tie breaker, which helped us win the olympics! Like WOW! 5 precious points, we were almost losing that challenge, but those were helpful 5 points. But seriously, who cares so much about points, it was like that amount of fun we had!
Checked into dorms, took the top bunk, actually all 5 of us took the top bunks cause the other girls choped the 1st bunk. Then slept right through till morning, but woke up because i could heard lizards like upstairs my bunk. going tsktsktsk. Wanted to catch the sunrise, cause i was pretty early, but took a shower while everyone still sleeping, and didn't get to see the sunrise. :(
Day 3: 9th March
Had team activites again while waiting for the other 2 groups to come back. It started to rain like wow. We brought the rain. Eric was telling us that it hadn't rained for 2 months, and its like we just came not too long, and it rained. WOO HOO! Had Lunch, and it was time for the telunas adventure race.
Something like amazing race, Had to past by 10 stations.
1st station: build a land raft, carry 2 members on it and walk around 2 flags
2nd station: find a coloured flag in the rocky area of the beach
3rd station: put non swimmers/those uncomfortable in the water in a kayak, while the rest of the members, with lifejackets too, swim and pull the kayak from the beach till the jetty. (lost my rubberband ): !)
4th: translate message, do jigsaw, and match countries with flags
5th: count the poles/sticks that lead from the dock to the beach. about 1000 plus.
6th: do volley ball challenge.
7th: trek to the jungle, and do stuff at the low ropes course. WE DIDN'T READ INSTRUCTIONS ON THE ACTIVITY SHEET. ALMOST COMPLETED ALL THE QUESTIONS BEFORE WE REALISED, AT THE LAST QUESTION: IT SAID. DO NOT COMPLETE THE ACTIVITIES ABOVE, AND JUST WRITE YOUR GROUP MEMBERS' NAMES ON THE PAPER AND PROCEED TO THE NEXT POINT. SO MALU. We did like jumping jacks and sang majulah singapura, and did so many things before we realised. But it was super fun. Like hilarious!
8th: do the bottle blowing thingy, to make the tune for twinkle twinkle little star.
9th: cross the river with :"crocodiles". those standard standard kind, of crossing the river with paper lah.
10th: got one long pvc pipe with a lot of holes. we had to fill it up with water, to get the ping pong balls out. WAHSEH. Stood there with everyone to compete, using all the fingers we could use, and stretching them to cover the holes man. Damn cramped la. so many people and trying to cover, more than to holes and still filling it up with water so the ping pong balls at the bottom can float up! But as i said, it was really fun, can feel the team spirit. right? team rocket!
went for dinner and had briefing with "jingle bells", and then the fun really kicked in. Team rocket stayed on, did our journals together. Decided to stay up the night. That was really the initial plan. Played truth or dare. Found out many interesting things, right guys? Hmmmm? Then joseph taught the rest how to play bridge, luckily liyin taught me already. its really addictive. played through the night.
But then slowly bit by bit, around 3am people could feel the tiredness setting in, then slowly went off to bed. Left Jac, Shiyan, joseph, daryl and i lah. talked a bit, bits of carol's group also alive and kicking, continued playing. Thunderstorm set in, brrrrrrrh, cold the strong wind was really really strong, then everything was flying. Quite fearful of a potential tsunami. really didn't want to sleep, stayed up late to catch my sunrise. think the rest couldn't take it, they grabbed whatever chairs they could find in the dining area and went off for a short nap, because the rain made it impossible to get to the dorms. xin mao and eugene taught me how to play poker, so that i could pass time and wait to watch my sunrise. its really addictive, what those card games can do to you. Luckily using jigsaw puzzles, if not. :(:(:( I think i'm quite good at it. so BRING IT ON MAN! I can play now. I'm not some suaaku who doesn't know much.Waited for day break, and saw sun rise. Beautiful, you'll never ever get to see it in singapore. Well breakfast was served.
Our last meal together.
4th day: 10th March
Wanted to go to the beach to play for the last time, but the weather got rainy and all. I finally threw those macs shoes away. horrid experience, never ever wanna go back there. had the urgh to play bridge.omg. addictive. played with whatever time we had left. but couldn't finish our last game. jac, joseph and daryl! we need to play again! took last pictures of everything, as a group. impromptu made our flag from the envelopes provided, like spelt out T.E.A.M R.O.C.K.E.T. Someone was a genius i tell you, last minute, with last minute flag. Took pictures with everything, because its the memories that we will get to hold from such pictures right. Took the last boat out of telunas to batam center, and took the ferry back to singapore.
